Paulien Oltheten, winner of the New Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles

08/07/2018

For the second year, the Louis Roederer Foundation supports the Rencontres d’Arles and shares their will to promote photography and all its actors. In that spirit, the festival associates the New Discovery Award with galleries considered to represent the finest pool of tomorrow’s talents.

As the Rencontres d’Arles have just opened to the public, the jury of the New Discovery Award, presided by Mouna Mekouar, awarded Paulien Oltheten on Saturday, 7 July. The project La Défense, The Venturing Gaze is the result of a successful collaboration between the photographer and the gallery Les Filles du Calvaire (Paris-France).

Presented until September 23, at Ground Control in Arles, Paulien Oltheten’s photos, performances, and videos explore what is common and extraordinary about human behavior in public places. She goes to parks, plazas, and the streets of big cities for direct observation, finding unique activity, repetitive gestures, odd objects, or design elements there. She then connects these events, creating a narrative formalized in words, and still and moving images.
