The 2023 Revelation Jury
The Revelation Jury decided to salute this crazy film depicting a gloomy portrait of contemporary America. Its mental, social and political disarray are filmed like a fairy tale: high-school student Lilian, played by young actress Talia Ryder, runs away while on a school trip and, through a series of encounters, crosses the spectrum of contemporary radicalism and madness, from white supremacists to Islamic radicals, from neo-punks to woke avant-gardists.
The Sweet East”, a zany “Alice in Wonderland” that wakes up the brain. Sean Price Williams’ first film is a hard-hitting, impetuous satire of our times, pointing out the absurdities, violence and excesses of our world at a frenetic pace. The extraordinary Talia Ryder – another revelation – far from a naive Alice – plays a disarmingly natural, lively heroine, biting, clear-sighted and uncompromising about the world and the monsters it breeds.
