Yérim Thiam-Sabine,
‘Architectural views in the photographic albums of the staff of French Sudan (1880-1898)’
Yérim Thiam-Sabine’s work is part of a doctoral thesis in art history on the architectural policies of the colonial administration of French Sudan, a colony created in 1890 that gained independence in 1960 under the name of the Republic of Mali. It examines the role of indigenous and colonial architecture in the construction of the territory and identity of this Sudanese colony.
His research project
His research project involves studying the photographic views of architecture produced by French officers during the campaigns to conquer the Sudan between 1880 and 1898. An inventory, identification and historical and geographical contextualisation will be carried out in various photographic archives, in particular those of the Société de géographie on deposit in the BnF’s Department of Maps and Plans. This research is seen as the first stage in a wider study aimed at mapping the French institutions that hold collections of photographs taken by staff officers in the French Sudan, which are essential sources for historians.
Louis Roederer Research Grant for Photography
The Louis Roederer Foundation Research Grant for Photography has been awarded to 24 researchers, helping to enrich the documentation of the photographic holdings of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
